PE in S2 and beyond: Peak Performance
All S2 pupils have one hour of compulsory PE per week plus one hour of Peak Performance in which they can choose to participate in either the Basketball Academy, Dance Academy, Football Academy or Rugby Academy. As of 2007, pupils can choose to continue their progress in these academies in S3 and S4 by choosing a three-period a week option leading to an Intermediate 1 or Intermediate 2 award. For full details, see the PE Academies page in the S3 Coursing Handbook.
Standard Grade PE
This two-tier course has been developed for pupils who wish to increase their knowledge of, and participation in the various aspects of Physical Education. If you would like to be able to make more varied and enjoyable uses of leisure time, or if you are considering a career in the sport and leisure industry, then PE is the course for you.
What is involved?
- Practical Performance - This course comprises five practical subjects:- swimming, basketball, badminton, gymnastics and hockey or football, as well as a study of fitness. Assessment is continuous throughout the course.
- Evaluation - By looking at performance and video recordings of themselves, and others, pupils will learn to analyse and assess strengths and weaknesses, and to improve their own and others' performances. This will be formally examined at the end of the course.
Remember that here is now a pathway to Higher and Intermediate Levels in P.E. in S5 and S6.
- Knowledge and Understanding - At the end of the course there will be a formal examination, which will test the pupils' understanding of the principals of movement, and their knowledge of the theory of the subjects they have covered.
Other requirements
When considering this course, it is important to remember:
- The PE Studies Course, combined with the core PE programme, involves six periods per week. This means that participants require a good level of fitness, as well as a great deal of interest and enthusiasm.
- A regular supply of suitable kit is essential.
PE in S5 and S6
In S5 and S6, Physical Education can be studied at Intermediate 2 and Higher levels.
Those seeking a career in sport and leisure can also take our Sport and Recreation Intermediate 2 course. This course works through four modules designed to build the knowledge, skills and confidence of the Learner. The course involves:
- running a sports centre
- coaching P7/S1 students
- job application skills
- and running fitness courses
all under supervision of PE staff.
Senior students can also choose to select two hours of recreational PE ("core PE") per week.

Examples of pupils' work
The best way of viewing the high quality of our pupils' work in PE is to look at the many photographs of pupils in action, such as those exhibited in the 1000×1000 exhibitions in 2007 and 2009. You can see a number of these photographs illustrating the PE pages on this website.
